What is the base of a hair prosthesis?

The base is the structure to which the hair is knotted or inserted.

It is the part that:

  • adheres to the skin
  • determines breathability
  • influences comfort and durability
  • affects the invisibility of the hairline

There is no "best" base.

There is only the one best suited to your lifestyle.

The 3 main families of Crown bases

The available bases are divided into three main families:

These three categories give rise to numerous technical variants (thicknesses, reinforced perimeters, different fronts, micro-perforations, etc.).

Not all variants are uploaded to the site to avoid confusion and simplify the choice.

The proposed selection represents the most balanced and versatile configurations.

Standard length of the prosthesis

1️⃣ CrownSkin (Poly)

Transparent thin film base (polyurethane).

Technical features

  • Realistic skin effect
  • Uniform surface
  • Available in different thicknesses
  • Easy installation with glue or tape

Pros

✔ Very natural-looking hairline when applied correctly

✔ Easy to clean

✔ Good stability

✔ Ideal for beginners

Cons

✖ Less breathable than lace

✖ Can be less comfortable in very hot climates

✖ More “sealed” feeling on the skin

A classic choice, suitable for those who want an invisible look and easy maintenance, and great for getting started.

2️⃣ DualBase (Hybrid)

Combined structure:

  • Lace center (breathable)
  • Poly perimeter or front (stability and invisibility)

Technical features

  • Balance between breathability and sturdiness
  • Mixed structure
  • Versatile for different styles

Advantages

✔ Good compromise between comfort and durability

✔ Stable anti-lifting front

✔ Greater control during application

✔ Excellent intermediate solution

Disadvantages

✖ Slightly more complex structure

✖ Requires precision in maintenance

✖ Not available in ultraSkin thicknesses

It is often the most balanced choice for continuous use, be careful not to use the wrong glue, it could end up in your hair.

3️⃣ AirLace (Lace)

Base made entirely of breathable micro-mesh.

Technical features

  • Extremely lightweight
  • Maximum ventilation
  • Maximum natural effect
  • Bleached knots

Advantages

✔ Extremely breathable

✔ Superior comfort

✔ Natural hair movement

✔ Ideal for athletes and hot climates

Installation options

AirLace can be:

  • Installed with glue or tape
  • Installed with clips (without a full shave) and glue on the front

The clip-in version is suitable for those who want to remove the hairpiece daily.

Disadvantages

✖ Very technical glue-down installation

✖ Requires more experience

✖ More delicate cleaning

✖ If applied poorly, it can be less stable

When glued to the head, the application is more complex than with poly and requires professional precision, especially if used without clips.

Variants available upon request

Within each family, there are:

  • Different thicknesses
  • Perimeter reinforcements
  • Thinner fronts
  • Micro-perforations
  • Custom configurations

They are not all available online to avoid excessive fragmentation of the range.

If there are specific needs, custom configurations can be considered.

⚠️ Important note

The choice of base affects:

  • Attachment method
  • Maintenance frequency
  • Daily comfort
  • Longevity

It is not just an aesthetic choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most natural base?

Naturalness depends on the application, not just the material.

  • CrownSkin (Poly) offers a very invisible lace front if applied correctly.
  • AirLace guarantees very natural movement thanks to its mesh structure.
  • DualBase represents a compromise between invisibility and comfort.

There is no such thing as an absolutely “more natural” lace front.

Which base is the most breathable?

AirLace.

As a micro-mesh, it allows maximum ventilation and is ideal for:

  • Sports
  • Warm climates
  • Prolonged use

Poly (CrownSkin) is less breathable because it creates a more sealed surface.

Which base is the easiest to install?

CrownSkin (Poly) is generally the easiest to apply with glue or tape.

AirLace requires greater technical precision when glued.

DualBase is intermediate.

Can I choose a tight burr and then “open it”?

It is very difficult.

A compact curl (e.g., 15mm or 12mm) cannot be easily transformed into a natural wave.

If you are undecided between two curl patterns, it is generally safer to choose the slightly looser one.

Can I use AirLace with clips?

Yes.

AirLace can be installed:

  • With adhesive or tape (continuous wear)
  • With clips (daily removal)

The clip-in version is recommended for those who do not want to shave the area completely or prefer a removable option.

Why is glued AirLace more technical?

Because the mesh is very thin and flexible.

This requires:

  • Precision in positioning
  • Experience in applying the adhesive
  • Correct tension during application

Improper installation can compromise stability and a natural appearance.

Which base lasts longer?

Durability depends on:

  • Frequency of use
  • Maintenance
  • Attachment method
  • Daily care

In general:

  • Poly can be more mechanically resistant.
  • Lace is more delicate but lighter.

There is no universal lifespan that applies to everyone.

Can I change the mounting method over time?

Yes.

You can switch from:

  • Tape-on adhesive
  • Clip-on tape (if the base allows it)

The choice of method affects comfort and maintenance.
