How to attach a hair prosthesis

There are four main installation methods:

  1. Liquid adhesive
  2. Perimeter tapes
  3. Combination of adhesive and tape
  4. Clips (removable installation)

The choice depends on:

  • Substrate type
  • Lifestyle
  • Maintenance frequency
  • Experience level

1️⃣ Liquid adhesive (continuous installation)

The most technical and invisible method.

When to use it

  • Open front
  • Long-term wear (7–40 days)
  • Poly or lace base

Pros

✔ Very natural-looking front

✔ No added bulk

✔ Even hold

Cons

✖ Technical application

✖ Requires precision

✖ More difficult to remove

Difficulty level

Medium–High

Installation with adhesive – Application methods

The adhesive can be applied in three ways:

1️⃣ On the scalp (recommended method for beginners)

It is the simplest and most controllable method.

It reduces the risk of getting adhesive in the hair and allows for more even application.

2️⃣ On the hairpiece

Slightly more complex.

It requires greater precision to avoid excess adhesive and smudges on the base.

3️⃣ On both surfaces

The most technical method.

It increases adhesion but requires experience in managing drying times.

"White" water-based adhesives (e.g., Ghost Bond)

  • Apply in multiple thin layers
  • Each layer must dry until it becomes transparent
  • The number of layers may vary depending on the desired hold and the type of adhesive

When the product turns from white to transparent, it is ready for the next step.

They are generally more flexible and less aggressive on the skin.

Acrylic adhesives (e.g., Walker Tape)

  • Are generally applied in a single even layer
  • They are more aggressive and have a stronger "sticky" hold
  • They offer a stronger hold
  • During the first 24 hours, they emit a strong adhesive odor

They require greater care during application and removal.

Important note

The duration of the hold depends on:

  • Type of adhesive
  • Amount applied
  • Skin type
  • Sweating
  • Scalp preparation

There is no universal hold time that applies to everyone.

2️⃣ Perimeter tapes (Tape)

The simplest and fastest method.

When to use them

  • Frequent maintenance
  • Initial installations
  • Poly perimeter

Advantages

✔ Easy application

✔ Faster removal

✔ Good adhesion

Disadvantages

✖ Slight thickness around the perimeter

✖ Less invisible than liquid adhesive

Difficulty level

Low–Medium

Tape application

Double-sided tapes are applied directly to the base of the prosthesis, following a precise layout.

🔹 On a CrownSkin (Poly) base

For a secure hold, proceed as follows:

  • Tapes along the entire perimeter
  • 2–3 central strips in the middle section

The central distribution helps to:

  • Prevent lifting
  • Ensure even adhesion
  • Improve stability during sweating or movement

Since poly is a solid surface, it also allows for application in the central area.

🔹 On a DualBase (Hybrid) base

Apply the tapes:

  • Only along the poly perimeter

The central lace section is not covered with tape, to maintain:

  • Breathability
  • Comfort
  • Mesh flexibility

Technical note

The tapes must be:

  • Applied to a perfectly clean base
  • Pressed down firmly
  • Activated only at the time of installation (removal of the protective film)

Correct tape distribution improves the stability and longevity of the installation.

3️⃣ Glue mix + tape

It is the technique most used by professionals.

The most balanced method.

Tape on the back perimeter + glue on the front.

When to use it

  • You want a natural front
  • You want easier maintenance at the back
  • Installation 7–30 days

Advantages

✔ Good compromise

✔ Invisible front

✔ Easier removal

Disadvantages

✖ Requires a minimum level of experience

✖ More steps during installation

✖ Need to have both tapes and glue

Difficulty level

Medium, Technical

4️⃣ Clips (removable installation)

The hairpiece is attached to your natural hair by applying a thin layer of adhesive to the front.

When to use it

  • You don't want to shave your head completely
  • You want to remove the hairpiece every day
  • Occasional use

Pros

✔ No adhesive

✔ Daily removal

✔ Quick installation

Cons

✖ Less secure than adhesive/tape

✖ Requires enough natural hair

✖ Not suitable for completely shaved heads

Difficulty level

Low

How to wear a lace hairpiece with clips and glued-down lace front

(Very common configuration: mechanical stability + front invisibility)

Recommended procedure

1️⃣ Scalp preparation

  • Shave or shorten the hair in the front contact area
  • Cleanse the skin with isopropyl alcohol or a specific cleanser
  • Apply a scalp protector if necessary (recommended for oily skin or sweating)

The surface must be completely dry before proceeding.

2️⃣ Prosthesis placement

  • Place the prosthesis on the head without securing it
  • Correctly align the hairline
  • Check symmetry and coverage

Do not secure the front before checking the position.

3️⃣ Securing the clips

  • Start with the back clips
  • Then the side clips
  • The front remains lifted

The clips must attach to healthy, not too fine, natural hair.

This step serves to:

  • Stabilize the prosthesis
  • Prevent movement during the front gluing process

4️⃣ Applying glue to the front

  • Lift the lace front
  • Apply a thin layer of glue to the scalp
  • Wait for it to become transparent (if using water-based glue)
  • Apply a second layer if necessary

Do not apply the glue too close to the natural hair.

5️⃣ Positioning the lace

  • Gently lower the front
  • Press down with your fingertips or a comb
  • Maintain pressure for a few seconds

Avoid pulling the lace to prevent deforming the hairline.

6️⃣ Finishing

  • Comb backward
  • Remove any glue residue
  • Leave to settle for a few minutes

Additional tips:

  • Use an elastic headband for 10–15 minutes
  • Avoid heavy sweating during the first few hours

Why this method is effective

  • The clips ensure structural stability
  • The glue on the front ensures invisibility
  • Maintenance is easier compared to full gluing

It is a hybrid system that combines security and a natural look.

⚠️ Common mistakes

  • Using too much glue
  • Not waiting for it to dry properly
  • Applying tape to an uncleaned surface
  • Choosing clips with hair that is too fine

In summary:

Maximum invisibility → Glue

Simplicity → Tape

Compromise → Mix

Daily removal → Clip

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does an installation using adhesive last?

It depends on:

  • Type of adhesive
  • Skin type (dry or oily)
  • Sweating
  • Scalp preparation

On average:

  • Water-based adhesive → 7–14 days
  • Acrylic adhesive → up to 2–3 weeks

There is no universal duration that applies to everyone.

Is it better to apply the glue to the head or to the prosthesis?

For those new to installations, it is recommended to apply it to the scalp.

It is easier to control and reduces the risk of getting hair dirty.

Application to the prosthesis or to both surfaces is more technical and recommended for those with experience.

Can I use only the tapes without adhesive?

Yes, especially on Poly bases.

The perimeter tapes are:

  • Easier to apply
  • Faster to remove

However, the front may be less invisible compared to liquid glue.

Is the glue + tape combo really necessary?

It is not mandatory, but it is the technique most commonly used by professionals.

It allows for:

  • A natural front
  • Easier maintenance at the back
  • An excellent balance between stability and practicality

Can the clips completely replace the glue?

Yes, but only if you have enough natural hair to attach them.

The clips:

  • Do not require a full shave
  • Allow for daily removal

They are not suitable for full shaves or completely hairless areas.

Can I play sports with the bonded prosthesis?

Yes.

Stability depends on:

  • Type of adhesive
  • Scalp preparation
  • Sweat level

For intense activities, a high-quality adhesive or a hybrid system is recommended.

Does the glue ruin the skin?

No, if used correctly.

It is important to:

  • Cleanse the scalp thoroughly
  • Avoid applying layers that are too thick
  • Use specific removers when removing the product

For sensitive skin, scalp protector is recommended.

What is the easiest technique to start with?

Perimeter tapes or clips.

Adhesive requires greater precision and timing management.
