NORWOOD SCALE

The Norwood Scale is the most widely used system for classifying male pattern baldness.

It helps determine:

  • how much thinning has occurred
  • what type of hair coverage you need
  • whether a frontal hairpiece is sufficient or if you need a full replacement

It is not a medical diagnosis.

It is a practical tool for choosing the right hairpiece.

LEVELS AND RECOMMENDED SOLUTION

Norwood 1

Natural hairline, no significant thinning.

👉 Hairpiece not necessary.

Optional micro-thinning only for modifying the hairline or AirLace with clips for a change of look.

Norwood 2

Slight thinning at the temples.

👉 Recommended solution:

Frontal hairpiece or micro prothesis partial.

Mistake to avoid: excessive coverage.

Norwood 2a

More pronounced recession, but still frontal.

👉 Recommended solution:

Frontal hairpiece with more coverage or a small partial.

Consider a natural density appropriate for their age.

Norwood 3

Obvious thinning.

👉 Recommended solution:

Frontal hairpiece or lightweight 3/4 hairpiece.

This is where choosing the right size and density becomes important.

Norwood 3a

Deeper frontal recession, without a pronounced vertex.

👉 Recommended solution:

Wide frontal hairpiece (Frontpro or Crownskin).

It is best to avoid excessive density to prevent a noticeable contrast with the sides.

Norwood 3 Vertex

Thinning concentrated on the upper/back area.

👉 Recommended solution:

Top partial hair replacement system (not just frontal).

It is important to measure the vertex area correctly.

Norwood 4

Front thinning + separate vertex.

👉 Recommended solution:

Wide partial or almost full.

The choice of base becomes strategic (lace with clips recommended for breathability).

Norwood 4a

Advanced frontal recession, less vertex.

👉 Recommended solution:

Very wide partial or light full.

Balance between coverage and naturalness is needed.

Norwood 5

The frontal and vertex areas are beginning to merge.

👉 Recommended solution:

Near-total hair replacement system.

Density adjusted based on the remaining side hair.

Norwood 5a

Extensive frontal hair loss with hair still present on the sides.

👉 Recommended solution:

Full hair replacement system.

A natural-looking hairline is essential here.

Norwood 6

Almost complete bald area, thin sides.

👉 Recommended solution:

Full hair system.

Moderate density to avoid an artificial look.

Norwood 7

Complete hair loss with only a low sideband.

👉 Recommended solution:

Custom full hairpiece.

The choice of color and density must be extremely consistent with the remaining sides.

  • Norwood 1 → No prosthesis (or lace with clips)
  • Norwood 2–3 → Frontal or partial
  • Norwood 3 vertex–4 → Large partial
  • Norwood 5–7 → Full
